« Penalties for Driving Drunk

Since 1980, several new DUI laws have been formulated to deal with drunk driving. Many NGOs and special organizations like MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) have done a lot in this regard.

Some of these laws include ALR (Administrative License Revocation) and Zero tolerance laws which have been passed by the majority of states. ALR laws permits arresting officer to keep a driver’s license until he passes a breath test.

As the legal drinking age is 21 and legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.08 % in almost all states, therefore Zero tolerance laws have been passed to restrict the adult drivers from having a considerable alcohol concentration in their blood. Other penalties like fine money, license suspension period and number of days behind the bars have also been increased to deal the menace.

Different states impose different DUI laws. Like Habitual Violator laws deprives an offender of his basic civil rights including giving vote and possess a weapon along with his license suspension for many years.

In such cases an offender has to pass through some kind of DUI education and assessment program. He has to satisfy a professional counselor during an assessment interview and has to follow the counselor’s guidelines regarding medical treatment in order to get his license back. This whole process requires time and money.

Some states also charge a fee for taking back a driving license and some impose extra insurance bindings to prevent the future mishap. In some cases an offenders has to compensate financially for the loss he has done with others. This can cost millions of dollars to pay as a part of their accountability.

Face to face meetings are also arranged between drunk drivers and victims to psychologically force them to lay off this bad habit. Growing awareness and effective law formulation regarding drunk driving has made it unacceptable and intolerable in society.
