« DWI Enforcement during Christmas and New year Holidays
In order to enhance the enforcement of DWI laws, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will join forces with other law enforcement agencies from around the state and nation.
Death Toll from DWI rises during Christmas and New Year
According to traffic safety experts, during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday period the daily death toll from drunk driving crashes is significantly more than during the rest of the year.

2,400 alcohol-related traffic crashes in Texas
In Texas during December, on average, more that 2,400 alcohol-related traffic crashes occurred. These accidents result in 80 fatalities on Texas roads and highways. (These estimates are based on an analysis of Texas CRIS data since 2003).
More Patrols During Christmas and New Year Holidays
This year, in cooperation with TxDOT, Sheriff Tommy Gage has delivered an important message for Texas drivers – he asked them not to drive if you’re tipsy or buzzed; they should call a cab or get a sober ride home instead.
As it is expected that more people would be traveling on Montgomery County roadways this holiday, so the law enforcement will be out in force conducting patrols to find and arrest drunk drivers.
Overtime Patrols will be Initiated This week
Overtime patrols will begin this week and they will continue into the New Year. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will have deputies who are specifically designated in order to enforce impaired driving laws.
The Texas Department of Transportation is funding these overtime Patrols.
Facts about Drunk Driving Fatalities

During December 2008, in Texas more than 39,000 traffic crashes resulted into 20,000 injured people and they killed 313 more. 85 of those fatalities involved alcohol.

In 2008, The five-day period around Christmas, accounted for 65% of the alcohol-related fatalities in December.

In 2008, among 3,468 fatalities on Texas roads, 975 were due to the alcohol-related crashes. This makes alcohol a factor in 28 percent of the fatal crashes that occurred in Texas.
