« Connecticut, New DUI Bill Expected

Chris Perone, D-Norwalk the representative of Connecticut State is expected to be behind a push for increasing penalties for driving under the influence with a minor in the coming year.

Connecticut DUI

Because of that minor bill Connecticut will be added into list of states that are having strict punishments for DUI or DWI with child passenger. For that Perone is expected to push for an immediate felony charge for the suspected DUI drivers with a child passenger less than 18 years of age. According to this felony the driver can be charged up to 4 years in prison.

Many states are having severe punishments for DUI with a child. In recent legislation it was voted by Wisconsin to criminalize a first DUI if a minor under 16 was in the car when it occurred. Most of states are having similar laws providing additional child endangerment clause to be used for increased penalties.

This year in New York a DWI bill “Leandra’s Law” is passed which will charge a felony to DUI with a person under the age of 16. Leandra name is given to this because of a young girl who died in a DWI vehicle rollover.

This new DWI bill in New York may push other states in country to have same strict laws for DUI/DWI. Connecticut is first to follow that suit. Legislatures will see to that how Connecticut defines “minor” because 18 years will be the oldest age on any such legislation in nationwide.
