- Police told that yesterday a 16-year-old boy was under the influence of a controlled substance when he crashed his SUV and killed two other teens in Chester County.
East Coventry Township Police Chief John T. Theobald told that in a statement that the driver of the 2005 Honda that got out of control was charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle driving under the influence, six counts of reckless endangerment, driving without proper insurance and related offenses.
He refused to disclose the name of the boy, but friends had identified him as Austin Ewers, a soccer star from Pottsgrove High School.
Police told that Ewers was driving west on route 724 about 8:45PM and were having five friends in his vehicle when he veered into the eastbound lane. The Honda traveled up an embankment, rolled over, and landed in the eastbound lane, colliding with a Nissan sedan.
Andrew Case, 17 years old and Michael Cantamaglia 16 years old were pronounced dead on the spot. Both were juniors at Pottsgrove High School, where Case was a starter on the lacrosse team and Cantamaglia was a soccer player.
In injured people there were Ewers and passengers Dylan Kunrath, 17, of Pottstown; Kyle Hilegas, 15, of Pottstown; and Garret Sterner, 16, of Telfod. The driver of Nissan Latasha Jones, 22, of Pottstown was injured also.
Theobald that all injured people had been released from the hospital and Ewers was taken to the Chester County Youth Center where he is waiting for court action.
Renee Merion the head of the juvenile unit of the Chester County District attorney’s office said that a hearing would likely be scheduled for tomorrow.
Ewers was under the influence of a Schedule 1 controlled substance according to the charges. State law consider this category for drugs the most dangerous because they present a high potential for abuse and have no accepted medical use.
