Binge drinking is found to be more common among the college students. Binge is actually a period of time mostly at least of two days, in which a person becomes intoxicated repeatedly. In this state of mind, he gives up all his normal activities and obligations for the sake of becoming intoxicated. This problem was examined and all its facts and statistics were brought into study.

It’s actually a serious and unrecognized problem. A descriptive method in order to reduce this problem has been given here.
Binge Drinking
Giving a crude definition of binge drinking, mostly people take it as an unrestrained and self-destructive drinking. It lasts for about a few days. During this time period, the heavily intoxicated drinker “drops out”. He doesn’t work, ignore his responsibilities, squander money, and get himself engaged in other non-conducive and unhealthy activities that may include fighting and insecure sex.
It is actually a time when a person repeatedly gets intoxicated and quits his normal activities. We can simply combine it as a prolong use of drinking and giving up of the normal routine activities.
Recent Researches About Binge
- Binge has been defined by a recent Swedish study. According to them it is the consumption of half a bottle of alcohol or it can be two bottles of wine on the same event.
- According to a study done in Italy, it is found that the normal drinking is an average of taking eight drinks a day. Its not bingeing.
- Recently study in United Kingdom defines it as consuming 11 or more drinks on the same occasion.
- Some researchers in United States have opposed what has been said by the UK researchers. According to them it is the consumption of 5 or more drinks in an occasion. Whereas “occasion” is referred as a whole day. Some have also expanded the definition by including that if a woman consumes 4 or more drinks a day, it’s also taken as binge.
Binge Versus Normal Drinking
To apply a prohibitionist definition for describing the drinking in USA is quite unrealistic and inappropriate. The binge drinking must be described as the any intoxicated drinking that ultimately leads you towards destructive behaviors. It is at least required that a person have a certain minimum alcohol level in his blood. It is a prerequisite to consider him as a binger. It is perhaps also required that a person should be intoxicated before being designated as a binger. But one thing is quite certain. Some of the unrealistic and inappropriate definitions given by a couple of researchers are deceptive and misleading.
Extent of Binge Drinking
The recent researches, TV programs, media and other sources of information have portrayed that being drinking is common in the youth and not just this; it has been growing like an epidemic. But the actual fact actually opposes it. It is found that the binge drinking in the youth has declined to a certain extent and it still has been declining for a couple of years.
Binge Drinking-Facts and Statistics
- According to the recent facts and figures which have been observed and calculated, binge drinking among high school youngsters is found to be declined from 41.2% to 27.9% between the years of 1980 and 2003. A drop of almost one third (32.3%) is quite clear.
- According to the results of the 6 world wide surveys which were conducted for military over a 15 years period that has been recently ended, it was found that the proportion of US military personnel who binge, has significantly declined.
- Among the American college students, binge drinking has clearly been declining for a couple of years. Dr. Henry did a survey in Harvard University and during his period of observation he found that the proportion of binge drinkers has been reduced to 22% in a very short time span.
Conclusion
These findings and data collection was done by Institute for Social Research (ISR), at the University of Michigan for the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The results were as follows:
- College binge drinking was reduced to the lowest rate of the entire period of 17 years and its survey was conducted. Furthermore, the proportion of binge drinkers’ among college students has greatly been reduced to a great extent.
- Dr. David Hanson and Ruth Ergs repeatedly conducted researches in many colleges all across USA. They also found the appreciable results that it has been declined.
Therefore, it is quite obvious that binge drinking is down and almost absent in the college students of America. These are the false impressions that the proportion of binge drinkers is increasing and “bingeing continues unabated.”
Consequences

These false impressions and the misconceptions about the binge drinking among college students make young people go off to the college thinking that most of the students would be drinking and bingeing. These misconceptions must be therefore, corrected.
There is disparity among the actual behaviors and perceived behaviors. The individual student thinks that other students on campus actually drink more heavily than them, surveys were conducted to study the actual behaviors of the students and results were supporting the above researches i.e. proportion significantly reduced.
A project regarding abuse prevention was carefully assessed on the campus. It also demonstrated that 35% reduction was found in heavy drinking. In alcohol-related injuries 31% reduction was observed and 54% reduction was there in alcohol-related injuries to others.
Publicity of Reality
There are millions of the students who still abuse alcohol. Exaggerating the issue and distorting its magnitude actually make the problem worse and convulsed. The actual facts must get publicized if we really want to reduce this particular problem. They will certainly help in removing the misconceptions and false impressions.
But unfortunately, we have got a huge group of researchers who keep on publicizing the drinking epidemics and exaggerating the bingeing; those make dramatic headlines and thus help in selling. At the same time, scare tactics are counter-productive. It actually turns out that the most effective way for reducing the abuse of alcohol is just to support the truth. All we need is to make the young people understand the actual facts and not misguided by the false misconceptions.
