- The California Office of the Traffic Safety had declared 2010 “Year of the Checkpoint”. The issued grants will be used for more checkpoints than ever before. A recent watchdog report shows that these checkpoints are making millions of dollars in towing fees and police fees and so many arrests of unlicensed and suspended drivers are made also.
A police officer told that these checkpoints are not working as money generator and we get a small percentage of the tow as an administrative cost and that is so small.
In last 2 years Palm Springs had been given over $300,000 from the federal government in order to make more checkpoints. That’s why in 2009 Palm Springs held eight more checkpoints and that resulted 22 DUI arrests.

Police crack down on DUI with checkpoints, patrols »
State law enforcement agencies would crack down harder on drunken drivers as they have joined a national DUI enforcement initiative and this will be starting on Friday.
This effort is being conducted by the Office of Highway Safety, which is currently overseeing several driving campaigns in order to make roads safer in the state.
OHS Director Tricia Roberts has said in his statement that they want everyone to understand that if you drive impaired, you will be arrested, and that does not matter what you drive whether a passenger car, pickup, sport utility vehicle or motorcycle.

Police plan DUI checkpoints in Brentwood and Livermore »
The Livermore and Brentwood police departments have planned to hold sobriety and drivers license checkpoints over the next seven days.
It has been decided by them that the checkpoints will be held in those areas where there is a high occurrence of DUI crashes or arrests.
